Your journey · Returning from incarceration
The fear is rational. So is the plan.
Name the fear Steady
Checking a box you have watched end conversations. Saying one sentence out loud and sitting in the silence after it. Wondering if everyone in the room already knows. None of that is weakness, it is an accurate read of a hard situation. Here is what is also accurate: employers who hire people with records report performance as good or better than their other hires, 81 percent of them (SHRM, 2021). The gap between those two truths is preparation, and preparation is exactly what this place is for.
- You choose where your story starts. That is authorship, not spin.
- One practiced sentence beats a hundred rehearsed explanations.
- The employer at a second-chance fair already chose to be in the room.
Build your answer Your story, built piece by piece
- The two-sentence version: one sentence of fact, one of direction
- The three-part answer: acknowledge, own it, pivot to growth (Ali, Lyons and Ryan, 2017)
- What is actually on your record: Indiana State Police limited criminal history check, before any interview
- Expungement: Indiana allows one petition in a lifetime. Talk to a lawyer first, always. Free help exists.
Work these out loud or on paper. Nothing you write here goes anywhere: this site stores no practice content, by design.

The application
The box
Before the talk, there is a checkbox. Here is how to think about it.
In-person interview
The silence after
You said it. The room went quiet. The next ten seconds are the whole ballgame.
Job fair
Ninety seconds at the table
A job fair conversation is not a small interview. It is its own thing, and it is winnable.
Final interview
The money question
Gratitude is not a wage rate. Know your number before they ask.
After the interview
After the no
A no is data with bad manners. Here is how to collect it and keep moving.
Handle the day The room
- What to bring: two printed resumes, your reference list, a pen. What to leave: the case file, in every sense.
- Arrive fifteen minutes early. If transportation is shaky, do the practice run the day before.
- Phone screens count double: quiet room, standing up, notes in front of you.
- Fair-day format: name, capability with a number in it, direction, one question. One breath.
Land it well The offer, and after
- The background check happens after they already like you. Timing is on your side, so tell your story before the paperwork does.
- Know your number before the money question. Your experience has a market price, look it up free before you guess.
- First 90 days: supervision appointments are appointments, schedule them like anyone schedules anything.
- Federal Bonding insures your employer for free for six months. Knowing it exists lets you answer the risk question with a fact.
